Bird Places to Visit

Canada

British Columbia

Emerald Forest - Parksville/Coombs on Vancouver Island. Wonderful open aviary open to the public that has over 300 parrots. They also breed parrots. In addition, they take in and bring neglected birds back to health. They have many Macaws (Scarlets, blue and golds, Severes, Green Wing, and Hyaninths), many species of Cockatoos, African Greys, Amazons, Pionus, Eclectus, and many more species including toucans! People can come by and visit for $7 Cdn. and can interact with many of the birds. The Emerald Forest also has gifts and bird supplies.

USA

Alabama

Montgomery Zoo - Montgomery, Alabama - located South of Northern Boulevard between Lower Wetumpka Road and Coliseum Boulevard, is a short drive from anywhere in Montgomery. There you will find the most exciting zoo in the Southeast, complete with 500 animals representing over 150 species - all in a barrier free, natural environment and divided into continents featuring Australian, Asian, African, and North American realms.

California

Free Flight - Del Mar, California - located on Jimmy Durante Blvd., near the Del Mar race track. Free Flight is where you can go for bird cuddling. Owned by the vet next door, Free Flight has many types of cockatoos, macaws, and other birds in a garden setting. The birds are on t-stands along a path under the trees. Many of the birds love to be held, whispered to, and cuddled.
San Diego Wild Animal Park - Lorikeet Landing is an innovative interactive exhibit. Almost 100 rainbow lorikeets have been trained to allow visitors to feed them. After paying to get into the park, the exhibit is free. Nectar can be purchased for $1 to feed the birds.
San Diego Zoo, San Diego, California - The ultimate in zoos with birds. A must for all visitors to San Diego!!

Florida

Sarasota Jungle Gardens - Sarasota, Florida - A natural paradise ... one of the world's most beautiful places. Jungle trails, wild animals, tropical birds and flowers make you feel as if you've stepped into another world... The world-famous "Jungle Bird Circus" features four shows daily with talented cockatoos and macaws providing delightful entertainment for all ages. See a bird roller-skating, or riding the high wire bicycle, or balancing on a ball. "Elvis" our bird artist, may even paint a portrait of one of the other circus performers. Plus formal gardens, Kiddie Jungle, and more.

Illinois

Brookfield Zoo, formally named Chicago Zoological Park, 215-acre zoo is known around the world for its innovative work in naturalistic and multi-species exhibits and is a leader among zoos in animal breeding and conservation. From an arid African grassland to steamy tropical rain forests, you'll take a journey through some of the most exotic landscapes on Earth, home to over 2300 animals representing more than 400 species.

Texas

San Antonio Zoo, San Antonio, Texas - Has an aviary with exotic birds, including Bare-eyed cockatoos, Major Mitchell's cockatoos, hawk-headed parrots, long-billed corellas, golden conures, banksian cockatoos, and lories.

Washington, D.C.

National Zoo, Washington, D.C. - The National Zoo is located on 163 naturally picturesque acres along Washington's Rock Creek. Thousands of animals--including invertebrates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals representing some 500 species--can be observed at the Zoo, many in settings that offer insights into social behavior and ecology. Zoo Entrances: Connecticut Avenue, NW (3000 block betweenCathedral Avenue and Devonshire Place); Harvard Street and Adams Mill Road intersection; and Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park.

Wisconsin

KayTee Education Center - Wisconsin - Utterly awesome. Tons of interactive displays, including: Microscopes to view closely about ten different bird feathers, a quiz where different native WI bird songs are played, and you have to guess which bird makes that sound, 15-minute educational video about where these birds come from (rainforest info, basically), LIVE chick feeding. The live exhibits included Charlie, a large-billed parrot who waves and says hello when you walk in; a glassed-in awesomely created finch exhibit; four large birds (a cockatoo, a B&G macaw, a grey, and a lory) with a girl who holds all of them and answers questions about them; and best of all - a huge double-sided "nature walk" area with a LOT of different types of birds - macaws, greys, a pink cockatoo, budgies, and many more
